Mooooooo

For those of you that eat a healthy well balanced diet, have you thought about what beef you are eating?

Conventional beef animals have usually been grazed on pastures grown with artificial fertilisers and chemicals and then grain fattened with the assistance of hormones and antibiotics.

Certified organic beef animals are fattened on natural, chemical free pastures.

If you eliminate grains from your own diet e.g. bread, wheat, rice, oats etc, what do you think you are consuming if you eat beef that is grain fed?

There are many differences with grass fed beef (compared with grain fed beef) that will make you want to eat more beef rather than less:

  • It has twice the amount of Beta-Carotene (a precursor of Vitamin A) – needed for normal vision, bone growth, reproduction and cell division.
  • It has more omega-3 fatty acids, and an improved balance of omega-3 to omega-6 fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acids reduce inflammation, and help prevent heart disease and arthritis. (Only grass fed beef is recommended by Food Standard Australia for beef to be considered a source of omega-3 fatty acids.)
  • It has 2.5 times the amount of Vitamin E, a natural antioxidant which can help mop up free radicals.
  • Grass fed beef has 30 – 40% higher levels of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), an important polyunsaturated fatty acid which is involved in reducing heart disease, cancer, diabetes and the accumulation of our own body fat.
  • It contains significantly less saturated fats (‘bad fats’) grass fed beef tends to be leaner overall (less than 3% fat).

I recently bought half a side from Dandaragan Organic Beef, which is WA’s largest producer of organic beef.

They supply top quality, grass-fed beef without the use of hormones, antibiotics and chemicals.

Both of their properties were converted to organic in 2000, which means they do not use pesticides, artificial fertilisers, hormones or antibiotics. Instead they use organic farming principles, grazing methods that mimic those of wild herding animals, perennial pastures and low stress stock handling methods.

Below is the link to Dandaragan Organic Beef as well as O’Reilly’s Lot which is the website I ordered through who are based in Malaga.  They are really helpful on the phone as I had no idea what cuts I actually wanted from the half side.  Everything comes cut as you have requested and vacuumed sealed.

It is also far more economical to buy your beef this way too.  You just need a large freezer to store it all!!

For those of you, not in Perth just google grass fed beef and find somewhere local to purchase your beef from.
